They probably wouldn't mind Asian womens dating/marrying white guys if white women were equally willing to date/marry Asian men. Gotta be clear about terms here: "ethnic group" does not equal "race". In fact, in anthropological terms, Judiasm most resembles a "tribal" identity - it is an affiliation you can obtain by virtue of either being born to someone who has it (in most but not all cases, matrilinially, as you point out) or by adoption into the tribe (by conversion if an adult or by adoption if a kid) - but the individual has the choice of rejecting it (for example, by conversion to a religion incompatible with Judaism). You can be a member of an ethnic group even if you're not genetically related to the other members of the ethnic group.

Yes, I am acutely aware that "ethnic group" =/= "race". Does any of this invalidate anything that I said in my first post in this thread. Believe me, I have run up against that barrier when I have dated Jewish women. But that doesn't change the fact that Asian males often resent (loudly) Asian women who go for white guys. I think, like the woman in the OP, a bit of projection is going on.

I'm not aware that it does, but I'm interested in hearing another perspective if you have one. You can only get so far before they tell you they love you but their mother would not approve. FUh V4Aod Ixs A6AYeah, I, too, think it's pretty cool that I'm a black Jew, but I should tell you that it's actually not so.. S., for many people, Jew= white (and your point about there being a white, social club aspect to Jewishness in the States is well-taken), but the point that JOCs like me have been making for years is that this is simply incorrect. In other words, the complainer is blaming lack of dating success on lack of inventory rather than actual personal flaws.

I went to synagogue with her family once and there were several Asian families there. (I know that this isn't the case in Orthodox Judaism, and I'm guessing that it's not (yet) the case in Conversative Judaism. In Reconstructionist Judaism, for instance, patrilineal descent counts just as much as matrilineal descent. Believe me, I have run up against that barrier when I have dated Jewish women. She's an amazing lady- lovely, beautiful and extremely smart. Jewish women may not like this phenomenon, but I haven't heard them expressing much anger about it.

It's possible some of these Asian women Jewish men happen to be dating are Jewish themselves (I don't know anything about Mark Zuckerberg's wife). I don't know if Reform Judaism has begun to move in this direction, but I wouldn't be surprised if it does in the foreseeable future.) I think the key point is that a lot of people have a Jewish identity, that they wish to perpetuate, that is ethnocultural not religious. (I know that this isn't the case in Orthodox Judaism, and I'm guessing that it's not (yet) the case in Conversative Judaism. You can only get so far before they tell you they love you but their mother would not approve. FUh V4Aod Ixs A6A ...examples of Jewish men with Asian wives or girlfriends: there's Mark Zuckerberg who recently married his Asian girlfriend. My grandmother, since the day they got married, has not been able to refrain from saying how 'lucky' this woman got, snaring a wonderful Jewish husband. The people I DO hear fuming about white males marrying Asian women are Asian males.

), I was marching in that big gay rights march in Washington, D. Because, you know, since my being black AND Jewish wasn't confusing (or repulsive, as they case may be) enough for people, I just HAD to add being gay to the mix. I don't have to travel- in my own local church, I know several couples like the ones you describe.

So, I'm wearing my kippah, and I'm merrily marching along, and this middle-aged white woman, a supporter of gay rights, approaches me from the sidelines. But that doesn't change the fact that Asian males often resent (loudly) Asian women who go for white guys.

Ethnicity is not race, or religion, or nationality, or language. You can be black as the ace of spades and speak only Amharic and live in Ethiopia, or pale as milk and live in the United States speak only English, and still be Jewish. Sorry, but I'm just seeing this (it's been a hell of a semester--baruch Hashem that it's finally over! Your extended family gatherings (assuming that you go) must be interesting.

Just like you can be a Navajo regardless of your ancestry or religion or language or nationality, as long as the other Navajo consider you to be a Navajo then you're a Navajo. But, then, it's not really fun unless you give 'em something to talk about, is it?

Shia's girlfriend isn't Asian, I also have no idea if she's Jewish or not, ..not always true (or, rather, it's not true that ethnic Jew = only white people), not only in a global context, but also in the U. (Most self-identified Jews I have known are very secularized, and many are explicitly atheist.) Also, remember that 'race' definitions are subjective. I don't know if Reform Judaism has begun to move in this direction, but I wouldn't be surprised if it does in the foreseeable future.)I know all that but the points still stand socially speaking. I also know that someone from any racial or ethnic group can be as Jewish as long as their ancestors converted at any point in the past but that is relatively rare. I thought it was really interesting when I watched a documentary recently about Jewish people in Africa (Ethiopia) that claimed for thousands of years that they true descendants of Jewish people that fled from the middle-east and are possibly a legitimate lost tribe of Israel. They're the ones who feel as if they're being left behind. Why does preserving some historical ethnic/religious group have to take precedent in their minds over the love and affection of real actual human beings?
